International
Over the years, we have forged strong relationships with international partners, helping to share knowledge, connect women in rail from around the world and inspire positive change across the global transport sector. Through collaborations with likeminded organisations in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australasia, Women in Rail actively supports a growing international community that champions gender balance and celebrates the contributions of women to the rail and wider mobility industries. We regularly participate in global conferences, contribute to international research and advise on the creation of sister networks based on the Women in Rail model.

By bringing together voices and experiences from different countries and cultures, we help ensure that progress is not limited by geography. Our global engagement reinforces the belief that diversity is a driver of innovation, performance and sustainability – no matter where in the world the tracks may lead.

Women in Rail: Malaysia

“If we want a stronger rail industry, we must grow the people who will build it – inspiring the next generation to see themselves in STEM and leadership roles, regardless of gender or background.”

Natasha Zulkifli
Founder Director, Women in Rail Malaysia

Women in Rail Malaysia was founded in September 2017 after discussions with Women in Rail UK, with a bold mission: to shape a Malaysian rail industry that is diverse, inclusive, connected, and ready for the future.

From the start, our focus has been on people – championing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), driving Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and building a strong talent pool that brings together the widest mix of skills, perspectives and experiences.

We believe the rail industry grows stronger when people connect – across companies, disciplines, and communities – to share ideas, solve problems and drive innovation. That’s why we create spaces for connection: conferences, talks, mentorship programmes and outreach events that unite students, engineers, leaders, policy-makers and change-makers.

Women in Rail Malaysia is now a community of over 700 members, with about 10% being male allies. We believe their involvement is vital because shaping a more diverse and inclusive rail industry is something we must do together.

Over the years, we have reached more than 11,000 students through school and university engagements, giving our members the opportunity to share their experiences and open doors for the next generation. We recognise global milestones such as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, using these moments to connect students with role models, spark interest in STEM, and highlight the contributions of those working across science, engineering and technology.

Through the Women in Rail Malaysia Conference in 2019, 2023 and 2025, we have delivered three international-level gatherings, attracting over 1,500 delegates from Malaysia and abroad. These events are more than just discussions – they are industry meet-ups where networks form, ideas are exchanged and partnerships take shape. We have also hosted over 11 C-level Leadership Talks, giving members direct access to the insights and experiences of influential industry leaders. Our mentorship programmes connect young talents with seasoned professionals, guiding them as they take their first steps into the industry.

Leadership

Our Founder Director, Natasha Zulkifli, leads with vision and purpose. She is also Director (Stakeholder & Business Development) at YTL Construction, sits on the board of TSH Resources Berhad, a leading plantation company with operations in Malaysia and Indonesia, and MyCreative Ventures Malaysia, an investment arm owned by the Malaysian Ministry of Finance dedicated to funding and growing Malaysia’s creative industries.

For Natasha, Women in Rail Malaysia is more than just rail and DEI. As she puts it:

“We are here not just to talk about diversity – we are here to make it happen. More voices, more perspectives, more talent. That’s how we build a rail industry that truly reflects the world it serves.”

Women in Rail Malaysia is more than an organisation – it’s a community, a network and a catalyst for change. Whether you are a student, an industry veteran, or someone curious about rail, you’ll find a place here to learn, connect and grow.
